Internal Assessment: Otherwise known as your historical investigation
General Information
- Your historical investigation is one of four assessments that IB uses to evaluate you in the diploma program. It will ultimately make up 20 percent of your score but this investigation will be done during your time in class rather than at the end of your senior year like the other three papers you will have to complete for your IB diploma.
- You have full control over what topic you decide to write about. There are a couple of stipulations you have to follow set by IB (and Ms. Wingfield and I suggest you change your topic if we are concerned about it, though that is rare). You can change your topic too, although we recommend you do that well before you come back for the fall of your senior year.
- The investigation is NOT just a research paper about a topic that you are interested in. You will be examining sources (something that we will do throughout your junior year), writing the investigation and then reflecting on your research and findings. If your research question can be answered by a simple sentence, then you will have a poor investigation. You will need to come up with something that truly analyzes an issue and dives deep into the evidence and the historiography as well.
- This website here has everything and anything about what the historical investigation actually is, it has question templates, rubrics, it breaks down each of the three sections, it is an extremely valuable resource that some awesome teacher has put together, so I highly recommend that you go through it.
- We will begin the IA this year, the goal will be to have a majority of it written as at least a first draft so that by your senior year you will only need to put the finishing touches and complete your reflection. We know senior year is hectic to say the least, so at least this is one thing that you will be able to get partially out of the way before then.
